“It is evidently known, beyond contradiction, that New Orleans is the cradle of jazz, and I, myself, happened to be its creator in the year 1902.” – Jelly Roll Morton
New York underwent a revolution during the 1920s: jazz came to town! Its music created a new life’s energy that soon spread across the world. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet, Bessie Smith – they all played in New York’s jazz clubs and dance halls of the 1920s. Jazz in New York of the Roaring Twenties, Robert Nippoldt’s unique combination of readings and jazz with the Just Jazz Trio composed of Eva Lotta Stein (vocals), Christian Manchen (piano) and Christoph Kopp (double bass) breathes life into jazz greats’ liveliest scenes and famous moments. Following a brief introduction Nippoldt reads excerpts from his award-winning book: on jazz history, portrayals of New York jazz musicians, legendary band battles and nightclubs and including plenty of anecdotes about the first jazz recording sessions. Musicians and reader, dressed in typical 1920s garb, through alternate performances revive the lively atmosphere of jazz cellar venues of the time.
